UNDAUNTED: Operation Transformation? I'm a bit more 'Operation pass me another slice of pizza'

There’s something addictive about filling our ever bigger television screens with larger girths. I’m not going to wade into the was-she-right-to drink-at-the-races angst-ridden episode of Operation Transformation. You can hear an amazing debate on that if you tune into Talking Point with Sarah Carey tomorrow at 1pm.

It doesn’t take a genius to see we have an obesity crisis. We are bringing up a generation of Augustus Gloops. That needs to be addressed partly through education and partly through a large dose of common sense.

Solving it? Well, I’m no expert, but here a few random mad examples:

  • Allow your kids to run around and ask your school to let them run around the playground. Do they still play Land, Sea and Air in cub scouts?  Jeez, if I played it so could your little darlings!
  • Vegetables are Cheap. And if you grow them, they are even more fun. I’m not preaching – hey, I love my end-of-week Domino’s delivery (I even have the app), but I eat a balanced diet that works out cheaper than buying processed food.
  • Chocolate is good. As long as you don’t go mad.

Back to obeso-porn. Where did it start? Like all dangerous things we can blame Channel 4. Who remembers Dr. Gillian McKeith and her obsession with looking at other people’s stool. Great TV but, c’mon was it real science?

Supersize v Superslim? Now we are heading into exploitation territory. Let’s all laugh at the chavs who just eat takeaway or the high-flying lettuce-loving PA/beautician... Stereotypes are us.

And then there’s the question of how I should feel as a disabled person watching? That’s a tricky one.

It’s obvious that, despite denials by those making these shows, many of those who appear seem to have psychological disabilities. Yes, there may be a screening process but I have my worries. And then there is the fixation on the body beautiful.

When I look at some of the bodies on Operation Transformation, I think, “Really, do they need to be there? They look pretty okay to me...”

‘Within normal body range’ is how I view it. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if I applied?!

Like I said, it’s obeso-porn.

Or maybe i’m just too lazy to do the 5k at the end of the series...
