A man has drowned in an attempt to make an underwater marriage proposal at a holiday resort in Tanzania.

US woman Kenesha Antoine said she and her boyfriend Steven Weber were staying at a wooden cabin with a partially submerged structure when tragedy struck.

Mr Weber swam down to an underwater window to hold up a sheet of paper asking her to marry him before displaying the ring.

The note read: "I can't hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… Everything I love about you, I love more every day."

He then turned the sheet over to reveal the words "Will you please be my wife? Marry me?"

He then showed her the engagement ring before swimming out of view.

Ms Antoine posted footage of the proposal online and updated it around an hour later with the words: “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

Two hours later however, she posted a further update revealing that her fiancée “never emerged from those depths.”

“There are no words adequate enough to honor the beautiful soul that is Steven Weber Jr,” she wrote.

“You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, “Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!”

“We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruellest twist of fate imaginable.

“I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together.”

The US Department of State confirmed to WBRZ that a US tourist died in Tanzania, but no other details were reported.

“I will carry the blessing of the love we shared with me forever,” wrote Ms Weber.

“And I will find you and marry you in the next lifetime, and the next, and the next, and the next... I love you so much, and I always will.”
