Mandy Kelly has been invited to go to Egypt by the country's Chief Prosecutor in her fight to get her two young sons back to Ireland.
Zayn (5) and Kareem (3) were abducted by their father two years ago.
The Dundalk woman had been travelling with the children and her husband, Ramy Gamal Maamoun Mohamed, to visit their grandmother in Egypt when the abduction happened.
She said her children were "forcibly taken" from her care and she made the decision to return home due to "concerns surrounding my safety".
Mandy Kelly has met with Justice Minister Helen McEntee, Children’s Ombudsman Dr Niall Muldoon, Egyptian officials, and senior Muslim leaders in Ireland to try and bring about the safe return of her abducted children.
She told The Hard Shoulder there has now been an update in the case.
"The Chief Prosecutor in Egypt - he would be the equivalent of the DPP here in Ireland - has requested to meet with me in order to continue proceedings," she said.
"Obviously [they want] to question me because they are now taking the case on - not only that it's a civil custody case but that it is an actual parental abduction case."
Ms Kelly said she believes her ex-partner's refusal to allow mediation likely contributed to the decision.
"I think one of the reasons that may have contributed to this is my ex-partner's refusal to accept a mediation offer with an Egyptian Islamic cleric," she said.
"I think alarm bells are starting to be raised".
She said her children, who were born in Ireland and are Irish citizens, "are at the heart of this: two little boys who need their mother".
