The United States has agreed to help refuel French warplanes fighting Islamist militants in Mali.

The announcement comes after the French-led offensive enjoyed its biggest success of the conflict so far - recapturing the northern city of Gao.

French troops seized the city's airport and a key bridge over the River Nile, reportedly killing a number of Islamist fighters.
