Today is election day in the United States and voters will have the final say on who should be the next President.

For weeks, pollsters have been predicting a photofinish between the Republicans’ Donald Trump and the Democrats’ Kamala Harris.

According to the respected FiveThirtyEight polling website, Ms Harris has a 50% chance of emerging victorious today and becoming the first woman to become President of the United States.

Donald Trump has a 49% chance and there is a slightly less than 1% chance that both campaigns win the same amount of electoral votes. If that happens, the President is chosen by a vote in the House of Representatives.

Yesterday, Ms Harris stopped off in four cities in the key swing state of Pennsylvania where the most recent poll found she was trailing Mr Trump by 1%.

“We got hard work to do but here’s the thing,” she told a rally in Allentown.

“We like hard work - hard work is good work.

“Hard work is joyful work and make no mistake, we will win.”

Mr Trump spent the final day visiting North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan where he promised a trade war would strengthen the US economy

“Are you better off now than you were four-years ago?” he asked a cheering crowd of supporters.

“I’ve asked that question so many times and I’ve never had one hand go up for the other.

“If you vote tomorrow, I will end inflation and stop the invasion of criminals coming into our country.”

The Hard Shoulder will be broadcasting live from New York this evening and Newstalk is hosting a special US election night special from 10pm on Tuesday.
