A plane was forced to make an emergency landing as passengers battled to save the life of a baby who stopped breathing during their flight. Travellers told how they gave the tiny boy the kiss of life after he apparently had a seizure and turned purple.

Grainy mobile phone footage shows Garrett Goodwin, who teaches CPR for a living, cradling the child as flight crew announce the plane is diverting because of "a medical emergency".

Passengers cheered and cried with joy when the baby came round and started crying. Mr. Goodwin was on board US Airways Flight 678 from Tampa, Florida to Phoenix Sky Harbor when the baby stopped breathing.

He told Fox 10 he was scared but his training kicked in at the right time.

He said "I did chest compressions, cleared his mouth, gave him some rescue breathing, stimulated him. He came back around. I was in the right place at the right time with the right experienced training and I hope anybody with any amount of training would have done that".

Passenger Andy Russick said one of the men working on the baby let out a cheer when the baby wailed.

He told KTVK "He yelled out something like, 'a crying baby is a breathing baby'".

A female passenger told Fox 10 "They immediately went to work and called for anybody who had medical training. There are people that assisted and we're told there would be an emergency landing and everything went smoothly".

"Everyone was invested and we heard the baby cry...it was just a teary moment for everyone".

Another woman on board said "It was a miracle on Flight (6)78, God put those folks on the plane and they needed them there to take care of the baby".

The flight diverted to Houston before carrying on to Phoenix, arriving an hour late.
