US officials cautiously optimistic Russia will agree to ceasefire

US officials have said they are cautiously optimistic about Russia agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire for Ukraine.

G7 allies have said Moscow could face further sanctions if it doesn't support the truce.

Donald Trump has repeated a claim that Ukraine's military is surrounded by Russian forces in Kursk.

Ukraniane's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he has spoken to the President of France on the ceasefire.

"We talked about the technical aspects of controlling the ceasefire, about possible next steps in diplomacy and in protecting our people - our Europe," he said.

"Security guarantees the situation on the ground in all of this we have the clear support of France."
