A former White House press secretary has said this week’s US Presidential Election is effectively a referendum on Donald Trump.

The former US vice-president Joe Biden currently holds an eight-point lead in the polls heading into the final day of campaigning; however, experts are warning that polls four years ago severely undercounted Trump supporters.

Mr Biden will visit Ohio and Pennsylvania in the coming hours as his campaign draws to a close, while President Trump is due in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Michigan - all states he won in 2016.

On The Hard Shoulder this evening, President Trump’s former press secretary Sean Spicer said many Biden voters would choose anyone over Trump.

“I don’t think you see the enthusiasm for Joe Biden out there - people out there in the country voting for Biden because they like Joe Biden," he said. “They are voting against Donald Trump.

“There is not a ton of enthusiasm when you ask folks if and why they are voting for Biden. The general sentiment out there is, you know, ‘I’m not, I am voting against Donald Trump.’

“So, I think the more Trump makes a contrast with Joe Biden in those policies, the better.”

He said Donald Trump generates more loyalty among his voter base than any other candidate he has ever seen.

“I have been in politics for over 25 years and I have never seen a candidate from either side of the aisle excite folks like this,” he said.

“I mean Obama had a tinge of this but if you look at the people who come out for Donald Trump it is like nothing I have ever seen in my political career.

“I think part of it is that Trump has spoken to a part of America that has largely felt overlooked and underserved and has been told “deal with it’ for want of a better phrase.

“He said that feeling extends past the Us border and into Europe and South America.”

Mr Spicer said he believes that, if Mr Biden wins, his presidency will be heavily influenced by the more left-wing elements of the Democratic Party.

“In my view, this is not Joe Biden of ten years ago,” he said.

“Joe Biden, I think, is going to be largely, I wouldn’t say a tool but at the behest of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders and folks on the far left.”

He noted that Mr Biden has promised to be the ‘most progressive president ever’ and suggested that he will do so by acting as a transitional candidate to allow the Democrats to bring forward a more left-wing candidate in four years’ time.
