The US Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died aged 87.
The court said she died of complications of pancreas cancer, and passed away at home surrounded by her family.
In a statement, Chief Justice John Roberts said: “Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague.
"Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her -- a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”
Appointed by Bill Clinton in 1993, she was only the second woman appointed to the highest court in the US.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was one of the best-known judges in the US - a member of the court's 'liberal wing' and a feminist icon.
Her record fighting for women's rights and her often dissenting legal opinions earned her the nickname 'Notorious RBG'.
Justice Ginsburg's death means the US President must now nominate a new justice - a process that is likely to become a major political battle in the weeks leading up to November's election.
