A fire at a vacant property was put out last night in Leixlip, County Kildare.
Gardaí were called out to the seven-bedroom bungalow on the Celbridge Road at 1.30am and the blaze was brought under control by the local fire brigade.
In the past few weeks, a number of properties rumoured to be earmarked for asylum seekers have been set on fire and Gardaí said they were aware of a "significant volume" of disinformation circulating about the building in the community.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire but Gardaí said “substantial damage” had been done to the property.
An investigation into criminal damage is underway and the scene has been preserved for a Garda examination.
Any witnesses have been encouraged to contact Leixlip Garda Station.
