The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin will meet later to discuss when a general election takes place.
Mr Varadkar wants it to be fixed for May, but Mr Martin is pushing for a date in April.
The two leaders have exchanged letters on the subject, ahead of the private meeting on Thursday evening.
While on Wednesday, a Government minister said she would be happy to wait until May to go to the polls.
Business Minister Heather Humphreys said a later date would give more certainty.
"What I'd like to see is what the Taoiseach proposed in 2018 - that we have an election in May of 2020.
"And that gives certainty to everybody".
