Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said Fine Gael could elect six candidates from migrant backgrounds in Dublin.

He was speaking as counting continues in the local elections with almost 60 seats filled.

The Government parties are doing much better than expected, while it has been a disappointing campaign for Sinn Féin.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are battling each other out to be the largest party in local government.

The Green Party is also doing better than expected which has led to mutterings of a snap General Election but Government TDs have been playing that down.

Independents are having a strong local election with their gain seeming to be Sinn Féin's loss - the party's Waterford TD David Cullinane has admitted "it's not what we had hoped".

Labour says it is happy with how it is performing so far while the predicted rise of the far-right does not seem to be materialising.

On Newstalk earlier Leo Varadkar said his party is countering far-right 'warriors'.

"It looks like we could have about five or six Fine Gael candidates from migrant backgrounds elected in Dublin," he said.

"Baby and Britto Pereppadan in Tallaght, Punam Rane who's certainly going to be elected in Kimmage-Rathmines.

"Supriya Singh has got a good chance as well - and also a woman from a Romanian background recently added to the ticket in Cellbridge is going to win.

"So for every kind of far-right warrior on Twitter who's going to get elected, there'll be at least one Fine Gael migrant background candidate in Dublin elected.

"So five fingers to the far-right".

Mr Varadkar added that those elected to local councils "are potential future TDs".

The counting of European Parliament ballots begins on Sunday.
