The Tánaiste has offered to meet Gardaí over the leaking of a confidential Government document during negotiations on a new GP contract.

Leo Varadkar has already apologised to the Dáil for his ‘errors of judgment’ in sending a copy of a deal agreed with the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) to the then-president of the rival National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP).

He insisted there was ‘nothing corrupt or illegal’ in the move – insisting he was attempting to get as much support for the deal among doctors as possible.

In recent days, Gardaí confirmed they are assessing a complaint to "determine what, if any, Garda action is required."

It was reported over the weekend that the former Health Minister Simon Harris has been interviewed by detectives.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on Minister Harris’ part.

In a statement, Mr Varadkar said he is aware of the complaint against him and noted that the gardai “have to do their job and investigate.”

“I would expect nothing else,” he said.

“They have not been in contact with me about the matter but I have, through my solicitors, made contact with them and I have offered to meet with them, answer any questions they may have, and provide a full statement on the matter.”

He said the facts are “no different to those set out by me in the Dáil last November” and said his legal advice is that he has “committed no offence.”

Mr Varadkar has come under sustained pressure from the opposition ever since the story came to light.

Last month, Sinn Féin finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty told Newstalk that new documents his party had obtained “completely tear apart” the statements Minister Varadkar made in the Dáil.

Deputy Doherty joins Newstalk Breakfast this morning to discuss the latest on the story.
