The Vatican has installed a special chimney in the Sistine Chapel from which white smoke will signal the election of a new Pope - once top secret deliberations have concluded.
Cardinals will begin their closed-door conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday.
The 85-year-old stepped down last month saying he did not have the mental or physical strength to carry on.
