Gardaí have confirmed the victim of a road crash in Limerick has been named locally as Joe Drennan.
It is understood 21-year-old Mr Drennan was standing on the Dublin Road in Castletroy, Limerick, when the two-vehicle crash occurred.
He was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of one of the cars failed to remain at the scene, and a Garda spokesperson confirmed the incident was a hit-and-run.
Mr Drennan was the current editor of the University of Limerick-based newspaper Limerick Voice.
He was also a contributing writer to Gay Community News (GCN), for which he was nominated for Journalist of the Year: National Media at 2023 Student Media Awards.
Limerick City West Councillor Elisa O'Donovan expressed her “deepest condolences” to Mr Drennan’s family and friends.
“Joe was a very talented and bright young man. He will be sorely missed in our Limerick community,” she said.
GCN also paid their respects to Mr Drennan, describing him as a “much loved friend”.
Gardaí in Limerick are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has footage to come forward.
