A group of kayakers and swimmers off Cape Clear Island in Cork got a surprise yesterday when they were joined by an enormous basking shark.

The curious fish seems content to enjoy the weather and play around with his new friends - behaviour which is quite uncommon amongst the generally shy sharks.

Basking sharks, which are common in Ireland's western waters, are completely harmless to humans, and survive mostly on a diet of plankton.
