Right in the middle of the desolate windswept plains of South Dakota stands a defunct tower.
The structure, visible for miles and miles across the flat expanse of the state, used to beam television signals to screens all over the north-west of the US. Now, at 457 meters high, the iron tower is nothing but a nuisance to any aircraft flying over the plains when it’s dark.
Climber Kevin Schmidt scaled the tower to change the flashing anti-collision bulbs that steer aircraft clear of a crash, and his high-stakes maintenance was all captured in stunning high definition by a drone.
