As part of YouTube's ongoing focus on their musical content, the Google-owned video site held the first YouTube Music Awards last night. 'Celebrations' included a number of international events in cities such as London and Rio, with the main show being held in New York. The events were also live-streamed.
As voted for by YouTube users, K-pop group Girls' Generation won the video of the year award for their hyperactive video I Got a Boy. Eminem was crowned artist of the year, with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis awarded the 'YouTube Breakthrough' award. You can check out all the winning videos here, including awards for less well-known YouTube musicians.
The live streamed award show itself was directed by Spike Jonze and hosted by Jason Schwartzman, and was a predictably eccentric take on the usual awards show structure. It featured several performances from the likes of Eminem, Lady Gaga and Arcade Fire. One unusual moment saw Schwartzman and musician Reggie Watts present an award while each holding a baby, for no immediately obvious reason.
Check out comedian Adam Buxton's zany 'YouTube Song' from the London awards below. All the other performances are available for viewing on YouTube itself.
