What was supposed to be a debate on a new security bill turned into a brawl in the Turkish parliament yesterday.
Two men were hospitalised after a fight broke out as opposition leaders attempted to delay a debate on new security legislation.
Ertugrul Kurkcu of the opposition HDP party told the Hürriyet Daily News: "I was wounded on the head while trying to prevent a punch aimed at Sebahat Tuncel. They attacked with the gavel and bell and hit us with iron chairs."
The proposed bill would give police additional powers to break up demonstrations, extend their use of firearms, and increase the maximum detention without charge to 48 hours.
The government says the measures are necessary for public safety, but the opposition say it's just a sign of further authoritarian rule by President Recep Erdogan, who has been criticised for his heavy-handed response to the Gezi Park protests in 2013, and the blocking of numerous websites used by protesters.
