A protest in west Dublin over the early morning arrests of anti-water charge activists has passed off peacefully.

In the last week, 20 people have been arrested in connection with the water protest in Jobstown last November, which saw Tánaiste Joan Burton trapped in her car for several hours.

All those who were arrested during the week were later released without charge.

Today hundreds of people gathered in Jobstown and Tallaght Village before marching to Tallaght Garda station and on to the Civic Theatre for a rally.

The event was organised by community groups against water charges in the area, with Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy leading the charge.

These protesters say the recent arrests are completely unjust:

Paul Murphy was released from garda custody on Monday afternoon, along with three other men who were also detained in connection with the incident. 16 more people were arrested over the rest of the week.

Socialist TD Joe Higgins has claimed the government are trying to criminalise people who take part in water charge protests.
