Google's Android software might have long-since overtaken Apple's iOS products in terms of market share, but there's one area that Apple still retain superiority: retail stores. While you'll find Google products in phone stores around the world, Apple's slick, expensive Apple Stores and network of 'authorised retailers' have played a significant role in the company's successful commercial strategy.
There have frequently been rumours that Google would make a move towards a greater high street presence, but it seems as if they might be planning a high seas presence instead.
Over the course of the last week, speculation has been rife that a huge barge that appeared in San Francisco Bay is being set up as the company's flagship showroom and store. Details about its eventual purpose have, however, been shrouded in secrecy.
CBS has done some investigations concerning the giant vessel, and have reported that it will indeed serve as a Google retail and marketing space. They believe the 'Google Barge' will contain showrooms built out of 40-foot movable shipping containers. As well as being able to travel by sea, it will be possible to dismantle the structure and transport the individual units by train or truck to reach ground locations.
The plans also include a full 'party deck' for Google to host important clients.
