As Met Éireann issues a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, large accumulations of the white stuff are already falling in the north west.
Frost and icy stretches are forecast in Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster.
Overall, it will be very cold today with occasional wintry showers, mostly in western and northern counties.
Met Éireann says some snow showers are likely - especially on higher ground - but some at lower levels too.
Sunny spells will follow later, with afternoon temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees and a fresh north west wind.
Tonight will be very cold as many areas will become dry and clear, but some further wintry showers will affect parts of the west and north overnight.
There will be widespread severe frost, with icy stretches as temperatures fall to between 0 and -4 degrees.
