The Mayor of the Melbourne suburb where murdered Irish woman Jill Meagher lived in Australia says her death has galvanised action across the country.

Oscar Yildiz is meeting the family of the 29-year-old in her home town in Drogheda in Co. Louth today to express his condolences on behalf of the people of Moreland. Jill Meagher lived and was murdered in the town on the outskirts of Melbourne.

In June serial sex offender Adrian Ernest-Bayley was sentenced to 35 years for raping and murdering the Irish woman. His conviction led to a review of parole laws in the State of Victoria.

Mayor Yildiz says her death has left a lasting legacy.

Councillor Yildiz flew into Ireland yesterday to express condolences to her family and friends on behalf of the people of his town.

He told Breakfast here on Newstalk earlier that they would like to remember Jill in Moreland but only if her family and the family of her husband Tom agree to it.
