For the seventh year in a row, Al Qaeda threats to attack racers have seen the world-famous Dakar Rally move from Northern Africa to South America, but this crash goes to show that safety measures still need to be taken.

Since it moved across the Atlantic, there have been fatalities, including a motorcyclist this year, as the race winds through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.

The El Martillo racing team was forced to withdraw from the competitions this year, but the three team members were lucky to escape with their lives following a crash in the Stage-7 section of the rally over the weekend.

Canadian driver Matt Campbell was driving at 180 km/h over a dip marked as ‘Danger 2’, the metric used to assess how fast drivers should go when covering the terrain.

The problem is the ‘Danger 2’ dip turned out to actually be a five-foot deep ditch, with the El Martillo trio flipping their vehicle in a terrible high-speed crash. The footage was caught on camera because another vehicle had made the same mistake not long before them.
