Over 100 taxi drivers protested in Dublin city this afternoon over changes to fares.
The National Transport Authority is increasing fares by an average of 4 per cent, and changing the number of fare bands. However this will not necessarily translate to a direct increase in income for drivers as the starting fare has been reduced, as has the fare for journeys longer than 30 kilometres.
However, taxi drivers say the cost of re-calibrating and re-sealing their metres – up to €250 - is not worth the increase in fares, and they say that some journeys will be losing money.
