Do you remember the guest speech from your graduation? You're forgiven if you don't: they're typically good-intentioned words if a little bland, often presented by some guest the graduating students have never met before and likely won't again. It's just one part of an old-fashioned ceremony before the graduation party, and you're one of the lucky ones if the words truly resonate beyond the length of the speech itself.
The latest graduates from the University of Western Australia, though, are unlikely to forget their guest speech, and not just because it's already been uploaded in its entirety to YouTube. They'll also remember it because university alumnus Tim Minchin spoke words that inspired, amused and surprised all attendees.
Minchin - the musical comedian who is best known for his songs like Canvas Bags and White Wine in the Sun - gave students nine life lessons. They include subversive tips like "you don't have to have a dream", "it's all luck" and "be a teacher. Please, please, please be a teacher". It's as enlightening as it is funny, if proudly unforgiving in its deconstruction of youthful idealism.
"You'll definitely forget all of it in a week," Minchin observes. Maybe not this time:
