You might have seen the video of the giant robotic dragon  that was doing the rounds over the weekend after it won the Guinness World Record for “world's largest walking robot”. If you didn’t, check it out below. The video doesn’t show much walking, but it does illustrate what a feat of engineering the robotic creation is:

The dragon-bot was completed in 2010, and was designed for a play. It was not the first, and not the last, attempt to build a mechanical monstrosity.

It will likely come as little surprise that Japanese engineers have been responsible for some of the crazier efforts over the years. Here, for example, is a massive (semi-)mechanical spider for some reason:

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of widly popular anime Gundam, Bandai constructed a full scale model of one of the robots from the series. It measures in at a whopping 60-foot tall. It cannot ‘walk’ like some other of the models here, but its head does move and it can be 'commanded' to light up and/or spew smoke. Why? Because it looks amazing:

San Diego Comic Con this year hosted one of the more terrifying mech suit efforts. Impressively, it was built in less than a month. Let’s hope the military leaders of the world don’t get any ideas from this guy:

How about a 40-foot tall robotic elephant?

There’s nothing quite as agile as Boston Dynamic’s famed ‘Big Dog’ - it might not be as gigantic as others, but it could easily outmaneuver them:

Kuka Robotics put together robotic arms and lifters for industrial purposes. But they’re not afraid to have a bit of fun either, as this nifty little dance number proves:

It’s only fitting that we end back in fair Nippon. Just remember: if you ever end up being chased by a T-Rex in downtown Tokyo, odds are it’s probably just a giant robot. Probably.
