Pope Francis has praised the “small steps” of diplomacy and peacemaking that brought about the rapprochement between the US and Cuba.
In his first public comments about the breakthrough, Francis told new ambassadors today that diplomacy was a “noble job”.
It has been reported that the Pontiff helped broker the new agreement between the two countries.
Last night US President Obama announced a range of measures to re-establish diplomatic ties with Cuba, after more than 50 years.
In a White House address last night, Barack Obama said a 'new chapter' in relations has been opened.
Cuban President Raul Castro made a simultaneous announcement in Cuba.
It follows the release of American aid worker Alan Gross, after five years in prison. Speaking about the announcement, Mr Gross said "I truly hope we can get beyond these mutually belligerent policies and I was very happy to hear what the president had to say today."
The announcements by presidents Obama and Castro mark an historic shift aimed at ending a half-century of Cold War hostility.
