A small village in France called 'Death to Jews' is refusing to change it's name even after several accusations of anti-semitism.
Residents of La-Mort-aux-Juifs village, which direct translates to the antisemitic phrase in English, claim the name dates back to the middle ages and therefore refuse to change it.
Jewish human-rights group The Simon Wiesenthal Centre (SWC) has written to France’s interior minister to complain about the anti-semitic name, which is officially registered with the country.
Marie-Elizabeth Secretand, the deputy mayor of nearby Courtemaux, told local news agency AFP that the name would not be changed.
"No one has anything against the Jews, of course, but it doesn’t surprise me that this is coming up again," she said.
The decision to change the name, however, lies with the municipal council.
Ms Secretand for the council said: "Why change a name that goes back to the Middle Ages or even further? We should respect these old names."
The municipal council met 20 years ago and refused to change the name. There have been no signs of a change of heart to date.
