Tax experts are warning about the risk to the economy of an increase in PRSI.
It follows weekend reports that a report is being prepared for the Cabinet highlighting potential shortfalls in the fund in the coming years unless steps are taken to increase contributions.
Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton signalled earlier this year that she favours a PRSI increase.
This drew much disquiet from her Fine Gael colleagues.
It is believed her case my be strengthened as the report is expected to show the Social Insurance Fund of the State at a €2.2 billion deficit by 2016.
Fergal O’Rourke is from Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
He says most people view PRSI as an extra form of tax.
He told Breakfast here on Newstalk that imposing an increase would hit efforts to get the economy going again.
