A care organisation is warning that Alzheimer's disease is becoming more widespread in Ireland, and showing the characteristics of an epidemic.
Bluebird Care says it is expected that 153,000 people will live with dementia in Ireland by 2046, which would have a significant effect on the economy.
Alzheimer’s is estimated to cost the Irish economy €1.69 billion per year in residential and family care, and it is said that at least three family members are directly affected by each individual diagnosed with dementia.
Breda Mulvihill, Director of Care at Bluebird Care, says “it’s always good to be aware of the symptoms which are connected to Alzheimer’s, such as memory loss, or a difficulty with thinking, problem solving or language that isn’t in character with your own self.”
