The mother of a gunman who killed 12 people in Washington DC - has apologised to the families of her son's victims.

Aaron Alexis opened fire at the city's Naval Yard on Monday, injuring several others in the United States' latest mass shooting.

The 34-year-old was later killed by Washington police responding to the shooting.
