A well known South African journalist was mugged just seconds before going live on-air, with gun wielding muggers taking his phone and the phones of several of the crew members and a laptop.

Vuyo Mvoko, SABC Contributing Editor, has released the footage of the robbery, showing him standing outside a Johannesburg hospital preparing to record a report on the arrival of Zambian president Edgar Lungu to arrive for treatment.

Two men pass behind Mvoko before sharply turning and accosting Mvoko and the crew.

Mvoko was reporting on Zambian President Edgar Lungu arrival to Milpark hospital.

The incident happened “literally seconds before going on air,” Mvoko said.

“Here comes this person like looking for a phone and I had my phone in my hand ... and then ... suddenly it’s all these strangers I don’t know.”

The man reached for Mvoko’s phone and when the reporter refused to give it to him the mugger said to his accomplice, 'Dubula le nja' (Shoot this dog), Mvoko told SABC.

“They took I think about two or three phones and also the laptop,” Mvoko said.
