Carson hit back saying that he doesn't remember there being "this level of scrutiny for one president Barack Obama when he was running".
Ben Carson has launched an attack on the mainstream media after the Politico website rolled back on their piece about his campaign "fabricating" a story that stated he was offered a full scholarship to the US Military Academy at West Point.
His team denied the allegations from Politico, who delved into his 1996 autobiography Gifted Hands to find the claim, and said that he had effectively been offered a place by the college.
The site subsequently rolled back on their headline, and Carson responded to a question about the story in a press confererence in Florida yesterday evening, where he said that the site were caught out telling a "bold-faced lie" and that he didn't remember there being "this level of scrutiny for one president Barack Obama when he was running".
He added that it was a move desperation to try and tarnish him, but those statements do seem to gloss over the fact that one of his fellow presidential hopefuls, Donald Trump, went on a media campaign trying to get Obama to hand over his birth cert because he didn't believe he was an American citizen.
The topic of the media's treatment of the GOP candidates was one that was raised on a regular basis during the CNBC debate late last month, and looks set to be a running theme for the next while at least.
