In its 30-year history as a film studio, Pixar has established itself as one of the best in the business, creating a series of brilliantly animated films that charm children and entertain adults, never shying away from the emotional wallop of good storytelling. But a new short film from two Pixar animators has finally been released online, taking things in a very different direction.

Borrowed Time is pretty much as far from the kind of short films that typically screen before a Pixar film in cinemas. The gut-wrenching short has been doing the rounds on the festival circuit for years, taking audiences all over the world on a powerful emotional journey over the space of six minutes.

“The goal for us was to make something that kind of contested the notion of animation being a genre. And only for children, specifically,” said director Lou Hamou-Lhadj in a behind-the-scene featurette. “We really wanted to make something that was a little bit more adult in the thematic choices and show that animation can be a medium to tell any sort of story.”

Set in the Old West, the short film focuses on a seasoned sheriff confronting with a life-changing moment from his past. The video is only available for a limited period of time and is embedded in the post below:
