While his ability to see clearly is not a problem, as a sufferer of protanopia, American man Opie Hughes is unable to clearly distinguish between shades of red and green. But now, thanks to a timely birthday present, he’s finally been able to see all the colours accurately for the first time – and it’s been a little overwhelming.
Using a pair of EnChroma glasses, a corrective pair that allow wearers to see more vibrant colours without, according to their website, “compromising the accuracy or color balance of the scene,” Hughes was able to take in the scene, and promptly burst into tears.
The glasses cost upwards of $350 (€306), and friends and family chipped in so Hughes could get a pair. Within moments of trying them on, he tears up when he notices the true colour of clothing, flowers, and his children’s eyes.
Though it’s not all rainbows, “The car’s a little dirty,” he says.
