Italian firefighters have rescued a dog from the rubble of a collapsed building in Amatrice more than a week after an earthquake in the region.

Firefighters found the animal when they went to a house in the Villa San Lorenza un Flavione area, just outside of Amatric.

They were returning to the scene with the owners of the home in order to try and retrieve some of their belongings from the rubble, when they heard the animal's cries.

The firefighters dug down and were able to pull the golden retriever out, who appeared to be in good health despite having spent nine days among the debris.

After checking Romeo for injuries, they gave him some water and carried him down to his owners, who had given up hope of finding their beloved pet alive.

Romeo is not the only pet to have been rescued from the rubble, as the region's firefighters also shared video of them rescuing a bird, stating that they were finding pets and returning them to their owners since the earthquake struck.

Several towns in central Italy have been devastated by the earthquake, which has killed almost 300 people.
