While coverage of elections in North America on this side of the Atlantic mostly seems to revolve around political pundits waiting with baited breath for what Trump says next, in Canada, the parliamentary polls open on October 19th. And while the American property magnate has captured the attention of the world in the race for the White House, it’s an independent candidate who’s become a viral Internet star in the race for a seat in Ottawa.
To convince voters in British Columbia to elect him, Wyatt Scott is courting Internet infamy with a video of epic proportions. Seen majestically striding a dodgy CGI Canadian goose before taking down a dragon and rescuing an ethnically diverse member of the LGBTI community, Scott tells voters: “Change is coming to Canada, and I’m here to lead that charge.”
Scott has an uphill battle if he is to succeed in his hopes of getting an independent into the Canadian House of Commons; Canada operates a ‘first past the post’ electoral system, with independents garnering less than 1% of the popular vote in 2011’s election. But Scott invites the electorate of the Mission Matsqui Fraser Canyon constituency to “think artisan politics, not partisan,” before growing a beard in seconds.
