There is a special kind of solar eclipse appearing this Sunday, November 3, 2013. The moon will blot out the sun in an eclipse that will be visible from eastern North America to the Middle East.
The phenomenon, described as “the romance between the Sun and the Moon", should be visible from North America, the Caribbean, northern South America, southern Greenland, the Atlantic Ocean, southern Europe, Africa, Madagascar and the Middle East.
Only some parts of the world, those crossing the Atlantic Ocean and equatorial Africa, will see a total eclipse though. People viewing the eclipse from other parts of the world will see only a partial blocking of the sun. Because of his more than 30,000 foreign tourists are expected to visit Uganda for an amazing view of this rare eclipse.
This solar eclipse is known as a hybrid because it will start as an annular eclipse before the Moon’s orbit gets close enough to Earth to become a total eclipse. It's due to take place sometime between sunrise and sunset on Sunday, November 3rd.
The eclipse should look something like this
Of the nearly 12,000 solar eclipses that have occurred since 1999 BC, fewer than 5% are hybrid eclipses. This shows how rare this type of eclipse is and why there is so much excitement surrounding the event.
Anyone planning to watch the eclipse will need proper eye protection to watch this or any other solar eclipse.
