Spanish police have released a video showing the moment Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was arrested on the Costa Del Sol.
Hutch was arrested on foot of a European Arrest Warrant in Fuengirola Southern Spain last Thursday.
The 58-year-old was wanted by Gardaí investigating the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in February 2016.
Spanish police said they began searching for Hutch after the warrant was issued and learned that he had been living in the Canary Islands up until April of this year when he went into hiding.
Police then focused their investigations on persons of interest in the Costa del Sol and learned that he was living there.
After discovering that he was hiding in a house in the centre of Fuengirola police set up a surveillance operation.
When he left the house to visit a well-known restaurant in the town centre on Thursday, police made their move.
They said he was “very focused on his safety” as he made his way through the town, making numerous stops and changing his clothes.
After he was arrested, he was found to be carrying false identification papers.
The following day, Gardaí requested a search at the house where he had been hiding, which was carried out on Friday.
Gardaí believe the Regency Hotel attack was carried out in response to the murder of Hutch’s nephew Gary in Malaga in September 2015.
The attack involved armed man dressed as Gardaí entering the Drumcondra hotel and opening fire during a boxing weigh-in in February 2016.
Daniel Kinahan is believed to have been the intended target. He was able to escape while David Byrne was shot dead by a man carrying an assault rifle in the hotel foyer.
