The Winter Solstice was livestreamed from inside the Newgrange site in Co Meath.

The prehistoric monument was built to align with the sun on this one morning every year, with the light hitting a special roofbox and illuminating the chamber.

Fáilte Ireland and the Office of Public Works teamed up for the broadcast on the shortest day of the year.

Viewers at home weree able to watch the spectacle, with a handful of lottery winners able to watch from the site itself.

The event was weather dependent, though, as skies must be clear.

Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Ireland’s Ancient East, Jenny De Saulles, explained: “The Newgrange site is one of the jewels in the crown of Ireland’s Ancient East and we are delighted to be teaming up with the OPW to share its story with as wide an audience as possible.

"The history, heritage and the ancient atmosphere of Newgrange conjure up everything special about Ireland’s history and unique past and we are really happy to bring these elements to a wider audience.”
