Ireland is well overdue a good summer according to Met Eireann forecaster Evelyn Cusack but with the added caveat: “that’s no guarantee we are going to get one.”

The meteorologist explains that at Ireland’s latitude of 50-55 degrees North our weather is variable.  There is sunshine some days and rain others.

“We have a wet climate, similar to that of Seattle. This is why our country is green.

“The odd time we have bouts of extreme weather, either cold or hot, but this is very rare. The hottest heat wave on record was back in 1995 and each year we hope for the same but it’s an exception.”

“It’s true that the last six summers have been wetter than average and we are due a good summer but there is no scientific way of predicting it.”

Long-range weather forecasting is ‘delusional’

Evelyn went on to warn people against investing in long-range predictions, “Anyone who does so is either delusional or disingenuous. People should never buy forecasts beyond a week because it’s just not possible to predict. They are a waste of money.

“That being said, there is no harm in hoping for one.  Even meteorologists like fine weather too.”
