The mother of a Donegal woman who was raped and murdered in India has said she needs her trial to be concluded so she can grieve.

28-year-old Danielle McLaughlin, who had both Irish and British citizenship, was travelling in the south-western region of Goa when she was killed in March 2017.

An Indian man has been charged with her murder - a charge he denies.

The trial has faced numerous adjournments and delays with the latest coming just yesterday.

Danielle's mother Andrea Brannigan told Lunchtime Live she last spoke to her daughter the day before she was killed.

"We didn't talk we actually text because I was on a bus going to Dublin with her younger sister," she said.

"Danielle text me to say she was with her friends and that she was safe."

Ms Brannigan said said her daughter was not backpacking, despite several reports to the contrary.

"She wasn't backpacking, that is something that has always come up with us," she said.

"She was not backpacking - Danielle went over to Goa that specific time to get her yoga teaching because she had planned to go to Canada.

"So she was over for that reason".

Delays

Ms Brannigan said she is waiting to see what happens next with the trial.

"It was only yesterday - this is what we're all waiting now to find out - they have applied for some order but we don't know what the order is," she said.

"It'll be heard tomorrow.

"There's no jury in India so the judge's will decide the verdict".

Ms Brannigan said she wants the trial to be over.

"The judge has now applied for an extension again and we're all waiting to find out if this is it," she said.

"I need it concluded - Danielle has young sisters - we all need to move on [and] just grieve."

Ms Brannigan said she wants her daughter to be remembered "for her, not for what happened her".

Ms Brannigan said she believes her daughter was in south Goa "26 hours" before she was killed.

She said she heard about the murder from Danielle's best friend.

"I didn't hear from her from the day before when she told me she was with her friends," she said.

"About 8.30 that night there was a knock at the door and it was Danielle's best friend and her mum.

"Louise was the one that told me, two days before it was confirmed it was her.

"The embassies never told me, either embassy, that Danielle passed away.

"No official to this day has ever said to me [that] my daughter was murdered in Goa.

"It came from her best friend and her best friend's mum."

Ms Brannigan added that she is planning to go over to India for the verdict.
