Last year, before it became known to the nation as the boast rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean, the LÉ Niamh was involved in intercepting a luxury yacht off Ireland’s south coast – and seizing the €290m worth of cocaine on board.
The crew of the yacht were arrested and the investigation into the drug smuggling operation continues, with an arrest made as recently as last Tuesday in Yorkshire, but tomorrow the Makayabella goes up for auction.
The proceeds from the sale will go to the State.
Newstalk’s Jonathan Healy visited Haulbowline in Co Cork to take a look, and was given a tour of the boat and a recounting of the story that led it to its berth on Ireland’s south coast, including how the boat fared exceptionally in storm conditions.
