The Minister for Education and Skills has launched a reform of Leaving Certificate Grades and the CAO Points System that will begin for students sitting their leaving certificate in 2017.
Under the new system, students who choose to sit Higher level exams and get between 30 to 39 per cent, will now get points.
She said the new system is designed to encourage students to take higher level papers and get more points to enter higher education.
The Minister said: "We have to reward students for what they can achieve and we have to be absolutely fair, in terms of whether they are doing ordinary or higher level.
"It will encourage students to work hard and to do well."
She also spoke about the Government being urged to focus on PE in schools which she said is something the Government is currently focusing on.
