Grieving husband Stephen Bergin is demanding answers after his wife, Paula, died on a busy ward where he says there was little dignity afforded to the family.
The incident happened in University Hospital Waterford in June of this year.
Mr Bergin says his wife died in a noisy ward surrounded by men watching the World Cup.
Initially, when Paula was admitted to the hospital they found a gallstone. As time went on, the pain became worse. Mr Bergin told Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime that it was some time before she was diagnosed with anything.
"When she was terminally ill, I had to bring her daughter to see her.
"We had asked for a private room.
"Kim was at the end of the bed and talking to her Mammy who was talking very low. At the same time, this guy was shouting across to the other man "Who is playing today?"
"Kim couldn't hear what her Mammy was saying.
"Paula died that evening. She died in that ward with other people there."
