A public ceremony to welcome home Team Ireland has taken place in Dublin City Centre.

Torrential rain in the capital has impacted somewhat on the turnout but around 5,000 people braved the weather to cheer the Olympians on.

Ireland had its best Olympic performance in almost 60 years taking 5 five medals: a gold, a silver and 3 bronze.

The biggest cheer from the crowd was for Bray boxer Katie Taylor who said she had been overwhelmed by the level of support since coming back from London on Monday.

Meanwhile Team Ireland’s Chef de Mission Sonia O’Sullivan said London 2012 had been an incredible experience.

She said she hoped Ireland’s success in the games would help build for the future.

While show jumper Cian O’Connor thanked the crowds for braving the weather.

The public who gathered said it was well worth it.
