Healy’s bakery in Cork has suffered extensive damage due to a fire which broke out at early this morning.
The bakery, which is still in its original location in Blackpool, County Cork, was opened in 1862.
It has been owned by the same family for six generations and has been open for 150 years.
Despite the intervention of emergency services, the damage to the building appears to be extensive.
Owner and confectioner Rachel Healy told the Neil Prendeville Show on Red FM that she was “absolutely devastated”.
“We don’t know what happened – we turned up for work at six and we had everything prepped because we had a late start this morning, normally in at five.
“When we came in, there was smoke and the surrounding buildings were evacuated.
“The fire brigade were there at six o’clock and we just don’t know – we don’t know what caused it, we don’t know how it started, we have no clue.”
No one was hurt or injured in the fire – including those in surrounding buildings.
Reopening
According to Ms Healy, she doesn’t expect her business to reopen for some time.
“We’re just apologising to people who have had cake orders – we've had hundreds of cake orders out for this week and for the weekend and stuff,” she said.
“Obviously I can do nothing, I’m terribly sorry... I’m so sorry to all those people, all I can do is apologise.”
Ms Healy said business was booming before the incident.
“We’ve kept going for years, I’m there 35 years – we're there forever and a day,” she said.
“We’ve the same gang for years and years and years, [all the staff] are all with us for the same; for years.”
Ms Healy said it will take a while to rebuild all that has been lost to the blaze.
