The owner of a Cork pub who barred Oscar-nominee Colin Farrell almost 30 years ago has said she now considers him a family friend.

MacCarthy's Bar in Castletownbere slapped the restriction on him when he was just 19-years-old and in the area filming.

Owner Adrienne MacCarthy told Moncrieff the young actor was outrageous.

"He was actually filming 'Falling for a Dancer'; this was 26 years ago and he was just out of drama school," she said.

"He was just a young, innocent 19-year-old - well not that innocent," she laughed.

"He had a wild three months down here; there was plenty of drinking and cavorting and enjoying.

"Really he was outrageous."

'His marching orders'

Ms MacCarthy said after three months, she had had enough.

"I just think I got worn down and worn out and decided it was time for him to go and gave him his marching orders," she said.

"I'm very tolerant really - but he was extreme, can we say."

She said Farrell came back to the area 12 years later, and she felt awful about it.

"I said, 'Oh my God, I felt dreadful because he's really famous now and he won't be coming in to see us and what a shame'," she said.

"I was upstairs one day tidying up the airing cupboard in a real kerfuffle, and my sister arrived up the stairs and said, 'Come down quick, Colin Farrell wants to see you'.

"There was just big hugs and he was so pleased to be back, and pleased to see that the bar was the same, that we were the same, that we still had the pug dog.

"He was just really happy."

'Friends ever since'

Ms MacCarthy said they discussed the barring incident, "which he really couldn't remember."

"We agreed to makeup and that was it - we're just been friends ever since," she said.

"He came back about two months ago with his son.

"He's not drinking or smoking now; he's much more interested in healthy living, looking after his son and just enjoying life.

"He's a great fella - we're very proud of him and no matter what, we're still pals.

"Hopefully he'll call in some time with or without the Oscar, but he'll still have to behave himself."

She said the ban was really lifted when he was in Cork to make 2009's 'Ondine'.

"He was in every day, and he used to come in - my mum was in her 90s at the time - he used to come in and have a cup of tea with her every afternoon," she said.

"He's just a family friend, really," she added.
