A man who died when his car hit a ditch in Co Westmeath may have been there for a number of days, Gardaí say.

Marcin Nowosielski (47) was found dead in the driver's seat of his car on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard just before 7pm on Tuesday.

He was sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. A post mortem is due to take place.

Four people have died on Irish roads in the last 24 hours.

46-year-old Aisling Moore and her eight-year-old daughter Abbigael Moore-Tournié died in a crash involving a car and a lorry on the N26 at Lismoran in Foxford just before 6pm on Tuesday.

An elderly man also died in a two-car crash on the R394 at Gartlandstown in Co Westmeath at around 5.30am this morning.

Garda Superintendent Liam Geraghty made an appeal for information around Mr Nowosielski's movements.

"It is unclear at this time the exact time at which the car left the road; although it is likely to have occured over previous days," he said.

"The last sighting of Marcin Nowosielski was in the early hours of Sunday 30th of June 2024.

"Gardaí are appealing for any person with any information on the movements of Marcin Nowosielski or his car - a black Nissan Almera [with registration] 02 CE 2568 - since the early hours of the 30th of June 2024 to come forward".

'Tragedy can befall anyone of us'

Supt Geraghty said using the roads is the 'single-most dangerous activity' people can undertake.

"These events in the last few days on our roads once again clearly demonstrate the tragedy that can befall any one of us," he said.

"No person wakes up and goes out on our roads to cause or to be involved in a road traffic collision.

"We all take using our roads as a commonplace activity, but using our roads is the single-most dangerous activity that we all take part in every day.

"An Garda Síochána's thoughts and sympathies are with all those families grieving for their loved ones who have died on our roads."

Supt Geraghty appealed to all roads users "to exercise extreme caution and stay safe".

There have been 97 deaths on Irish roads so far this year - an increase of 12 on the same period last year.
